Write Write Write

The last few days have been getting away from me. After months of rain, this island is lying under a great blue bowl at the moment. I should not say that out loud as the ocean has very good hearing and will ship over a thick bank of grey fuzz to stop up the blue hole in the sky.

There were five months (although I was not here for them) of rain--do people know this when they sign up in droves to get married in Hawaii? I think the tourist board leaves out such information. Vera Wang and wet sand do not mix. And so now--the summer. There have been friends visiting, old friends getting together, new friends going to the beach, and a subtle frenzy to each day. It has been lovely, companionable and not conducive to working. In order to get lots done my day has to duplicate the last. Sleep, write, eat, write, teach, read, beach, repeat.

For me a steady footprint of repetition is road to an evenly threaded working week. A racing, running, burst of inspiration--while fun and productive--can also derail my little red wagon. Good books, good friends, good weather--my wagon gets derailed very easily. So, back to routine. My small green flash pot of fresh ideas seems to like routine. It is like holding absolutely still so that the neighbor's unsocial cat will come and lie against your legs.

  1. Your blog is the first one I look for, and I miss it when it's not there, but I'm sure taking a small break is a good thing, especially if it's on the beach, with friends, in Hawaii.

  5. Opposite weather patterns here, I'm afraid... it's been the most glorious autumn, but finally the vile conditions have found us... GREAT for writing (14 hours straight on the redraft yesterday, thank you very much), horrendous for the spirits. Give me blue skies and sunshine any day (thank goodness both have made a comeback this afternoon...). Priya, good luck with maintaining that pesky daily routine when the distractions are so plentiful and appealing.

  7. I love to read about what you work on and how and what the weather is doing where you are etc.... For me it was something like this yesterday: off into central London to apply for my son's new passport, then race to Liberty for new buttons (had run out and I love their haberdashery department), then take-away sushi for lunch in Hyde Park, home, sit down and "be creative and productive" since I have two days at the market coming up... Weather lovely and warm :-) More creative work today... Love from London x

  8. i love that department too! it smells like cedar wood and roses and wool and clean laundry all at once. their flowers outside the door are scrumptious. they always have fat pink peonies that make we want to wear sprigged muslin and be able to sing. have fun! xx

  10. 5 months of rain is pretty amazing! It's been pouring here all day and a cyclone warning has been put up for my state and a nearby one. Which makes it a perfect time to snuggle with a book and a hot cup of tea :) Or to catch up with blogs!

kals, ooh, cyclones are scary. i would taking my cosy tea and book in the basement if i were you! 5 months is pretty nuts but unfortunately not that unusual--this is listed as the wettest spot on the planet--eew. what are you reading?

  16. Priya, working is just plain hard when you're in paradise, and all you want to do is go sailing in Kaneohe Bay, or walk along the beach. I like the new picture too! Very island-y.
